Somatic Symptom Disorder

Somatic symptom disorder is characterized by an intense focus on physical symptoms that impairs daily functioning. This preoccupation causes emotional distress and challenges in managing everyday life.

It's important to understand that the presence of somatic symptoms does not imply that individuals are fabricating their pain, fatigue, or other physical sensations. Rather, the disruption comes from the intense reaction to these symptoms and the resulting behaviors that affect their ability to function normally.

Illness Anxiety Disorder

Illness anxiety disorder or hypochondria involves excessive worry about having an undiagnosed medical condition. Individuals with this disorder obsess over bodily functions and sensations, believing they have or will develop a serious illness. Even when medical tests show no signs of illness, they remain unconvinced and continue to worry.

This preoccupation causes significant anxiety and distress, leading to behaviors like frequent medical visits, seeking numerous tests and treatments, and avoiding situations perceived as health risks. These behaviors can disrupt daily life and relationships.
